   Part of the "young guard" of Israeli authors whose works were published beginning in the late 1950s. He was born in Jerusalem to parents native to the city for six generations, was educated there, and eventually graduated from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, where he majored in philosophy and Hebrew literature. He lived in Paris for several years as the general secretary of the World Organization of Jewish Students but returned to Israel in 1967 to live in Haifa. He served as dean of students at Haifa University, and since 1972, he has been on the faculty there as a professor of literature. His first stories were published in 1957, and since then, he has published numerous stories in Keshet Quarterly and various literary supplement sections of newspapers. In 1962, he published his first full-length book, The Death of an Old Man. His other books include In Front of the Forests (1968), Nine Stories (1971), In Early Summer 1970 (1972), Until Winter (1974), A Late Divorce (1985), The Lover (1986), Five Seasons (1991), Mr. Mani (1992), The Return from India (1994), Voyage to the End of the Millennium (1997), The Terrible Power of a Minor Guilt (1998), The Liberated Bride (2001), The Mission of the Human Resource Man (2004), and A Woman in Jerusalem (2005). Among his plays are A Night in May and Last Treatment and Babies of the Night.
